St. Jude Parish@SpiritLive(TM)

Key to our Crest: Two connecting semi-circles - indicating the joining of our two parishes of St Jude and St John Vianney. They also form the outline of a fish. The letters in the middle is the greek word for 'fish'. Each of these letters is the initial letter of five Greek words translating as "Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour". This symbol was used extensively by the early Christians under presecution. They identified each other by one drawing in the sand a part of a fish and the other completing it.
The sailing vessel is a symbol of St Jude. It also represents the Church which St Jude (also know as Thaddaeus) carried to many ports on his missionary journeys.
The stole is pre-eminently the priestly vestment. This represents St John Vianney who preached Christ and spent many long hours each day hearing confessions of people from all over France and Europe. The Chi Rho (XP) are the first two letters of the Greek word for Christ. The 'Fleur de Lys' is a symbol of the Blessed Trinity and indicates France, St John Vianney's homeland.
'PRAISED BE JESUS CHRIST' is our parish motto. The crest was devised by Mr Vladimir Mosmondor, a graphic artist of Canberra.

Dear heavenly father, source of love and mercy;
we thank you for all the gifts you have given us.

We pray most earnestly for your blessed rain
to fall on the parched earth of our country.

We pray especially for those who work the
land and are suffering severely at this time.

Please help us, the people of Australia, to have the
courage to become good stewards of the gifts you give us.

Please give us generous hearts so that we can
share our bounty with all others in need.

We offer this prayer through
Jesus Christ our loving Lord and
Saviour.

PLEASE MAKE SURE OF YOUR VALUABLES.
Aids to parishioners

Both churches in the parish are fitted with hearing aid induction loops. For those who use hearing aids they should turn them to the 'T' position. If you have a problem please let the secretary know.

We now have disabled access to the Church. Please let people know that we have made St Jude’s and St John Vianney's more welcoming places to come to!

Please don’t use the driveways to park in during Mass. Other people may wish to drop someone off after you have arrived. Thank you.

Due to privacy laws if you or someone you know is in hospital and would like to see a chaplain you need to ask either at the hospital or here in the parish so we can organise for the chaplaincy to know that you are there.

If you are sick, or know of anyone who is sick, and unable to attend Mass and would like the Blessed Sacrament brought to your home please let the parish office know so we can organise it for you.

PEOPLE WHO ARE ON PARISH ROSTERS: e.g. Special Ministers of the Eucharist, Cleaners, Readers, Altar Servers, Acolytes. If you have an email address would you please send an email to the parish office? This will enable us to email rosters and changes to you. Thank you.

Children's Liturgy  At St John Vianney's Church it is held during the 10.00am Mass on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Sundays of the month.

During school term it is celebrated every Sunday at the 8.30am, Mass at St Jude’s.  Children are invited to come forward at the beginning of Mass by Father, given a blessing and then dismissed with their presenters, to go and celebrate the Word of God in the Parish meeting room.  Everyone returns in time for the Offertory, as the children present the gifts and any special intensions put together at the liturgy. The presenters/leaders are ordinarily parishioners/ parents/ teachers from the Parish that lead this special liturgy.  The main aim of the liturgy is to explain and explore the concepts and meanings of the Gospel in a way that children can appreciate the sacred text.  All children at Mass, regardless of which school or faith community they belong to, are invited and welcome to participate in this liturgy, from about age 4 onwards.

If you are interested in becoming a presenter, please come along to be part of a liturgy to see what it is all about, no prior experience is necessary and when placed on the roster, initially you are paired up with a more experienced presenter.  It is a lovely way to be involved in Mass with your own child(ren) and others. So give me a call if you would like to be involved.  Helen Maybin Ph 6161 5315

We now have Communion distributed under both kinds at Sunday Masses. This is a more significant way of receiving the Blessed Sacrament. Please collect and partake of the Host FIRST then approach the Chalice for the Precious Blood.

At St Jude's Church the Hosts will be given out from the centre aisle and the Precious Blood will be given out from the side aisles.

HOLY COMMUNION UNDER BOTH SPECIES FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN.  Because of the objection of some parents to their children’s reception of the chalice at Communion time, Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist have been instructed not to offer the chalice to children. If parents wish their children to partake of the Precious Blood they should receive first and then indicate by a gesture that the child will also receive the chalice. Fr Kevin Brannelly. P.P.

COMMUNION BY INTINCTION: Holy Communion may be distributed by intinction in the following manner: "the communicant, while holding the paten under the chin, approaches the priest who holds the chalice and at whose side stands the minister holding the vessel with the hosts. The priest takes the host, intincts the particle into the chalice and, showing it, says: ‘The Body and Blood of Christ.’ The communicant responds, ‘Amen,’ and receives the Sacrament on the tongue from the priest. Afterwards, the communicant returns to his or her place" (no. 49).

It is important to note that:

The communicant, including the extraordinary minister, is never allowed to self-communicate, even by means of intinction. Communion under either form, bread or wine, must always be given by an ordinary or extraordinary minister of Holy Communion (no. 50).

The Church provides that when Communion is given by intinction, it must be planned beforehand. This can be seen in the practice of having a minister stand at the priest’s side for the purpose of providing the chalice for the intinction. Further, a communicant should never take the Host and dip it in the chalice himself. Nor may the communicant take the Host over to a minister with the chalice and hand it to him or her to dip.

Housekeeping

USE OF URNS AND TABLES in the Church Meeting Room: Please ensure that the urn is emptied, tables are wiped clean, cups and saucers are returned to the cupboards after use and the kitchen is left tidy.

MIRINJANI COMMUNICANTS LIST: an update is now available in the Sacristy at St Jude’s Church. Special Ministers of the Eucharist please take a copy.

MASS is broadcast every Wednesday morning at 9.30am on the Canberra Christian Radio Station FM 91.9 or 93.4. Parishioners are encouraged to bring this to the attention of Catholics who may be housebound.

Aims and Goals

We try to model ourselves on the early Christians, and build community within the Parish, by sharing our Christian life and supporting each other. Adults give example to their children and involve them in their Christian sharing.

What is a Family Group and what does it do?

A Family Group consists of some 10-14 'units' (a unit can be a single person, to a family with many children), with a variety of ages, as has an extended family. The groups meet monthly for picnics, casserole nights, games nights etc. This is the way people get to know each other and bonds slowly develop.

Who can join?

Family Groups are open to all who follow the Christian ethos, regardless of age, marital status etc. The parish of St Jude’s and St John Vianney’s has 10 Groups.

Developing Relationships

In Family Groups, we encourage people to be themselves, to take time to share with others, to listen to other's stories and tell our own.

The Spiritual Dimension

Our acts of kindness, personal concern and group sharing have a vital spiritual basis which reflects the gospel call to act. Family Groups see their priority as living their faith in practical, day to day ways.

Our Logo

The heart and the people symbolise a willingness to deepen Christian love and acceptance of others. Since the Cross is very much within people's lives, it is the centre of the logo. The motto, "A Family for All", reinforces the practical reality that all members of the Community are welcome to belong.
